Held at Moonee Valley, the G2 Alister Clark Stakes is a race for 3 Year Olds held under set weight conditions over 2040m. This year the weight for the colts and geldings is set at 57kg. In 2016 the race offers total stakes of $200,000 with the winner set to collect $120,000.
Achieving Group 2 status in 1979, the race has been won by some good horses, including Vo Rogue (1987), Zabeel (1990), Naturalism (1992), Blevic (1995) and Pins (2000).
The Alister Clark Stakes forms a part of the Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival.

Starting his Autumn campaign in the G3 Manfred Stakes, the Darren Weir trained colt finished 7th, beaten just under 3 lengths. 2nd up he took on the G3 CS Hayes Stakes and was well supported to start as the favourite. Settling in the 2nd half of the field, he made good ground to take the win on the track, only to have the race taken from him in the steward’s room, owing to interference caused 900m from home. His most recent run in the G1 Australian Guineas he started in the widest barrier, settled near the rear and again came with a strong run and had a battle with Tarzino up the stretch. Again he ventured to the steward’s room but got to keep the race this time around.
A 4 time winner from just 8 starts, Tally is a member of the all-powerful Godolphin team and trained by John O’Shea. Given a teaser in the Spring he was given a look at Group competition in the G2 Moonee Valley Vase, finishing 5th behind Jameka. Resuming in January he easily won his first 2 starts in Benchmark 70 events before again given a look at the better races, taking out the G2 Autumn Classic over 1800m at Caulfield. A victory here would make it 4 successive wins and he is 1 from 2 on the Moonee Valley surface.
The Hayes/Dabernig trained colt has been up since September when winning a set-weights maiden at Ballarat. Since that effort he has finished 3rd to Mahuta in the Listed Gothic Stakes and 5th when beaten 3 lengths in the G2 Sandown Guineas also behind Mahuta. Placed in his next 3 starts since the Sandown effort, he broke through again in a 3YO handicap event when given the top weight of 59.5kg and was able to utilise the 3kg claim of Dylan Dunn. That win was at Moonee Valley over the same distance as this and he followed that with a 1¾ 2nd to Tally in the G2 Autumn Classic.
A member of Team Hawkes, Jadeer will be 3rd up this preparation in this race. He is a winner over this distance here at Moonee Valley in September and followed that with 3 runs all in strong company. He finished 3 lengths away in the G1 Spring Champion Stakes behind the winner Vanbrugh, was then a ¾length 2nd in the Listed Geelong Classic and finished his campaign when distanced in the G1 VRC Derby behind Tarzino. Since resuming he has been looking for more ground and has stepped up from 1400m when 1st up, to 1600m and to the 10 furlongs here. His only visit to the Valley resulted in a win over this trip.
Headlining Alister Clark Stakes Night in early to mid-March each year is the $220,000 Group 2 Alister Clark Stakes. The race is for three-year-old colts and geldings over the 2040m trip, under the lights of Melbourne’s Mooney Valley Racecourse. Previously the event was run at weight-for-age and open to all three-year-olds, evidenced by the victory of champion filly Surround in 1977. Over the years, the distance has changed after starting out as a mile in 1939. It’s been contested over 2000m (when staged at Flemington in 1995) and 1509m (2001). However, since 2011 it’s been over 2040m. The Alister Clark Stakes is now contested at set weights, plus penalties.
It was a Principal Race from its inception in 1939 to 1977, before becoming a Group 2 in 1979. A number of great gallopers have claimed this event, including Naturalism, Durbridge and Zabeel. Good lead up races which provide a fair indication of what to expect on the night include the Group 2 Autumn Classic and the Group 3 CS Hayes Stakes. The event is named in the honour of Alister Clark, the foundation chairman of the Moonee Valley Racing Club and master of Oaklands Hunt Club from 1901 to 1908.
