Horse Racing | Australia Stakes

The Australia Stakes is a Group 2 weight-for-age race held on Australia Stakes Day during the Melbourne Autumn Carnival. It tends to bring out the better sprinters who are gearing up for bigger races at the carnival such as the Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning Stakes or the Group 1 William Reid Stakes. It is conducted at weight for age over 1200m and offers $220,000 in prize money. Originally a Listed Race, it reached Group 3 status in 1990, before being upgraded to a Group 2 in 1994.

The event has gone by many names in the past, starting as the Stanley Wootton Stakes, then the Norman Carlyon Stakes, before settling on its present Australia Stakes in 2010. This race has been won by many great horses over the years, by none more so than our unbeaten sprinting queen, Black Caviar, who saluted in 2012 and 2010. Other quality gallopers to win the race include; El Segundo (2007), Hareeba (1995), Schillaci (1993), Redelva (1990) and Special (1988).
