Horse Racing | Autumn Classic

The Autumn Classic is a Group 2 horse race held annually in late February on Blue Diamond Stakes Day. The event is restricted to three-year-olds, run at set weights over 1800m at Melbourne’s iconic Caulfield Racecourse. The race isn’t considered a premier event for three-year-olds, but it can unearth some very talented gallopers. Owners and trainers often use this 1800m event to test their horses over a distance slightly longer than the mile to see if they have staying potential.

Horses which do well in this event may go on to compete in stronger 2000m races such as the Group 1 Australian Cup in March or the Group 3 Easter Cup in April. Classy gallopers that have won this event in the past include Elvstroem (2004), Redding (1993), Triscay (1991), Stylish Century (1990), Myocard (1987), Gurner’s Lane (1982) and Double Century (1979).
