Horse Racing | Black Caviar Lightning Stakes

Held annually in mid to late February is the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes, a Group 1 weight-for-age horse race. The event was previously known as the Lightning Stakes until a change in name in 2012 to honour the Peter Moody trained Black Caviar. The champion won the hearts of racing enthusiasts across the globe with an undefeated record of 25 races, including 15 Group 1s. Her record eclipsed the previous mark set by Tommy Smith’s Kingston Town. This race is the only event Black Caviar won three times, dominating rivals in 2011, 2012 and 2013. With $500,000 up for grabs, it is one of the most prominent weight-for-age sprints in Australia.

The race itself is over the short 1000m distance at Melbourne’s Flemington Racecourse and forms a part of the Autumn Racing Carnival. Other top flight gallopers which have taken out this event include; Scenic Blast (2009), Apache Cat (2008), Miss Andretti (2007), Takeover Target (2006), Fastnet Rock (2005), Choisir (2003), Testa Rossa (2000), General Nediym (1998), Mahogany (1995/97), Schillaci (1992/93), Placid Ark (1987), River Rough (1984/85), Maybe Mahal (1977/78), Century (1974), Wenona Girl (1963/64), Sky High (1961/62) and Todman (1960).
