The Blamey Stakes is a Group 2 Open Handicap raced under set weight plus penalties conditions. Held at the Flemington racecourse, it is part of Australian Cup Day and one of the premier Group 2 races of the Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival. The Blamey Stakes is held alongside some of the more prominent Group races of the Carnival, including the Group 1 Australian Cup, the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap and the Group 2 Kewney Stakes. Over 1600m, it is ideal for strong milers or fresh stayers. The event offers $200,000 in prize money. The race is named after Sir Thomas Albert Blamey, Australia’s only native born field marshal at the time and Victoria Racing Club committee member from 1947 – 1951.
While it may be a Group 2 race now, it was a Principal Race from its inception in 1955 to 1978. It was run at weight-for-age from 1955 to 1980. The Blamey Stakes has provided some handy winners over the years, including 2012 Melbourne Cup victor Green Moon, the taleted but injury-plagued Whobegotyou (2011), crowd-favourite Apache Cat (2007), Durbridge (1994-95), Better Loosen Up (1990/91), Vo Rogue (1988/89), Hyperno (1980/81), Surround (1977), Gunsynd (1973) and Tobin Bronze (1966/67).
