Horse Racing | Carlyon Cup

Held each year on CF Orr Stakes Day in mid-February, the Carlyon Cup is a Group 3 Open Race held at Melbourne’s prestigious Caulfield Racecourse. The race itself is run over the mile (1600m) under set weight and penalty conditions, and is usually used as a lead up race for successful gallopers. The Group 2 Blamey Stakes, held at Flemington Racecourse on Australian Cup Day, may be the next target selected by owners and trainers, while the Group 2 St George Sakes, held at the same venue on Blue Diamond Stakes Day, is also an option.

The Carlyon boats prize money of $150,000 and has been won by a number of classy gallopers such as Super Impose (1989), Veandercross (1993), Northerly (2001) and Apache Cat (2007). The event has quite a history with its inauguration as a Principal Race coming in 1977. However, it was run as a Group 2 between 1980 to 2002, before dropping back to Group 3 in 2003.
