Horse Racing | CF Orr Stakes

Headlining CF Orr Stakes Day, the CF Orr Stakes is a major race being the first Group 1 of the Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival and the first of the New Year. The event is held in mid-February each year and is one of the premier weight-for-age races of the season in Melbourne. As a Group 1, it attracts the best gallopers in the country to battle it out over the 1400m distance at Caulfield Racecourse. With prize money of $400,000 up for grabs, it’s also a race that trainers and owners pencil in their calendars as one to win.

The Group 2 Australia Stakes over 1200m at Mooney Valley Racecourse a few weeks prior is the ideal lead up race for this event, while horses may go on to compete in the St George/Peter Young Stakes or Futurity Stakes later in the autumn at the same track. A number of greats have taken out this event, including Let’s Elope, Lonhro and recently the Peter Moody trained unbeaten mare Black Caviar. Two Aussie turf heroes, Manikato (1979/80/81) and Vo Rogue (1988/89/90) won the CF Orr three times. In the early 2010’s jockey Luke Nolen and trainer Peter Moody won the event four times in five years.
