Shooting for a hat-trick of wins the David Hayes/Tom Dabernig trained filly has a record of 7: 2-2-1. Opening her preparation with a 3rd in the Magic Millions Maiden Plate at the Gold Coast, at her next up run she was a dominant 4 length winner when starting a red figure favourite at Moonee Valley in a set weights maiden over 1200m. Stepping up in distance to 1400m at her next start and in class, being the G2 Angus Armanasco and she didn’t disappoint with a solid 2¼ length victory.
With a wide barrier to overcome, the Tony McEvoy trained filly will need to be bringing her best game. At her 1st up run she took on the G3 Vanity Stakes over 1400m without the benefit of a trial and was a good winner, ending the unbeaten streak of G1 winner Perfect Reflection. They ran the last 600m that day in good time and she is 2 from 2 over the Flemington 1400m. Last spring she showed the signs of being a nice filly when taking out the Listed Lexus Hybrid on Melbourne Cup day and was then a nice 3rd behind Mahuta in the G2 Sandown Guineas.
With the advantage of meeting Catch A Fire 2.5kg better off since their last meeting, Pasadena Girl will be 2nd up here. 1st up in the G2 Angus Armanasco she looked like running up to the leaders at the 200m and then just peaked on her run and battled well to hold 3rd. Her 2015 Spring was all in the top flight running 4ths in the G1 Thousand Guineas, the G2 Moonee Valley Vase and the G1 VRC Oaks. A previous winner when 2nd up she is also 2 from 3 on the Flemington track.
From 5 career starts the John Thompson trained filly has recorded a win on debut and then finished 2nd at each of her next 4 starts. All 5 starts have been this preparation, the latest in the G2 Angus Armanasco where she tracked the subsequent winner Catch A Fire all the way. The start prior she finished under a half-length from the winner Risque in the G3 Kevin Hayes when starting as favourite. Blake Shinn rides for the first time and she has the benefit of starting from gate 1.
The Kewney Stakes is a Group 2 race held at the famous Flemington Racecourse on Australian Cup Day. One of the premier Group 2 races of the Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival, it features alongside other first-class Group races, including the Group 1 Australian Cup, the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap and the Group 2 VRC Sire Produce Stakes. It is a 1400m race for three-year-old fillies under set weights conditions, with $200,000 in prize money.
The event is named after Arthur V. Kewney, who was secretary of the Victorian Racing Club for 21 years, retiring at 74 years of age in 1946. Starting off as a Principal Race over 2000m in 1952, the Kewney was upgraded to a Group 2 in 1979. The distance was reduced to 1600m in 1985, before again being trimmed to its present distance of 1400m in 2010. Some of the more famous winners of this event include Faint Perfume (2010), Special Harmony (2004), Sunline (1999), Northwood Plume (1995), Mannerism (1991), More Rain (1983) and How Now (1976).
