The Matron Stakes, or the Schweppervescence Trophy, is a Group 3 race for mares only under set weight plus penalties conditions. Held at the famous Flemington racecourse, it is part of Australian Cup Day that takes place during the Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival. It covers a distance of 1600m, attracting some handy females vying for a slice of the $150,000 in prize money. While the main events might be the Group 1 Australian Cup and the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap, the Matron Stakes offers import black type success for breeding pruposes later down the track.
The race has gone by many names of the years, from the Patinack Farm Stakes in 2009, to the Schweppervescence Trophy form 2011-2013. Originating as a Listed Race in 1994, it gained Group 3 status in 2006. This distance has always been around a mile/1600m. Some of the more high-profile winners are Bonaria (2013/14), Pinker Pinker (2011) and Excited Angel (1994), while in 2016 Felicienne was successful for trainer Darren Weir and jockey Harry Coffey.
