Held each year on Blue Diamond Stakes Day is the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate, one of the best handicap races of the Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival. Contested over the sprint distance of 1100m, the 2016 edition offers total prize money of $500,000.
The event groups together some of the best sprinters in the country who often go on to contest the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap down the Flemington straight-six. In 2008, Weekend Hussler completed the Oakleigh Plate/Newmarket Handicap double.
The race dates back to 1884 and the honour roll contains some great sprinters like Starspangledbanner (2010), Snitzel (2006), Schillaci (1992), Placid Ark (1987), Dual Choice (1971/72), San Domenico (1949), Aurie’s Star (1937/39) and Wakeful (1901).
The Chipping Norton Stakes forms a part of the Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival.

Predicting a fast edition of the Oakleigh Plate. HEATHERLY from barrier 1 will be looking to hold out the likes of LORD OF THE SKY and VEZEALAY from outside barriers but any of FLAMBERGE, ECLAIR CHOICE, BOUNDING, GREGERS and KEEN ARRAY can be handy too.
BOUNDING appeals as one who can sit just off a solid speed from a reasonable draw and win this race. She has the extraordinary record of a top-2 finish from 14 of her 16 starts. She's only had 2 starts for the Snowdens with her 1st up win last prep this course and distance being ultra impressive. Her latest trial suggests she's right to go.
HEATHERLY's win here last start was spectacular. She made some good sprinters look average as the fought out the placings 5.5L away. If she gets one "cheap" section then she'll go close to winning.
KEEN ARRAY is one of the better sprinting 3yos around. His 2nd in the G1 Coolmore Stud at the end of his last prep confirmed that. From gate 4 he should get the box seat and be hard to beat.
FAST 'N' ROCKING finished 3rd in this race last year. He and THE QUARTERBACK are sure to be charging from the back.

The David Hayes and Tom Dabernig galloper will be 1st up and brings an impressive record of 4 wins and 2 2nds from his 8 starts. His Spring campaign yielded each of those 6 podium finishes from 6 starts. A winner of the Listed Blue Sapphire at Caulfield, he rounded out his campaign with a 2nd in the G1 Coolmore Stud Stakes behind Japonisme. He has started twice at Caulfield for his listed win and another 2nd. Opening a slight favourite with UBET when markets were released, a guide to his chances can be taken through the fact that jockey Stephen Baster is working hard to be able to ride at the 50kg Keen Array has been allotted for this race.
Breaking a 16 year old hoodoo at her last start, she will need to break a 15 year drought this time around if she is to be successful. Attempting to become the first 3YO filly to win the race since Miss Kournikova in 2001, Heatherly is on target for her 4th successive win. 2 starts back she scored a good win over 1100m at Flemington carrying 56kg in a 3YO set weights and penalties event and then was given her first test when pitch-forked into the G3 Rubiton Stakes she delivered the best way possible with a commanding 5 ½ length win. She has finished in the money at 7 of her 8 career starts, all when racing on a good surface.
From 16 starts, Bounding has finished out of the money on just one occasion and that was when taking on a hot field in the 2014 G1 Manikato won by Lankan Rupee. The mare is a G1 winner in New Zealand and a 5 time Group winner overall and last preparation was successful in the G3 The Heath over this track and distance. Trialling twice to prepare for her race return, her 2nd trial was very impressive taking them all the way for a 5.5 length win.
The Spring campaign of Vezalay was impressive returning 2 wins and 3rd from 5 starts. A winner 1st up at Caulfield over 1100m in a mares only handicap she then tackled the G3 Cockram Stakes and finished a half-length 3rd. Her next start she finished 6th in the G2 Lets Elope under a length from the winner Amicus who has won at G2 level already in the Autumn and she followed that with a 4th to Politeness in the G3 How Now. Rounding out her campaign with a win in the Listed Alinghi Stakes, she resumes here without an official trial, is 2 from 4 on the track, 3 from 3 at the distance, 2 from 2 at the track and distance and 2 from 3 first up.
Held each year on Blue Diamond Stakes Day is the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate, one of the best handicap races of the Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival. Run in late February at Caulfield Racecourse, the race is contested over the sprint distance of 1100m, with prize money of $400,000. The event groups together some of the best sprinters in the country who often go on to contest the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap down the Flemington straight-six. The most popular lead up to the Oakleigh Plate is the Group 3 Rubiton Stakes on CF Orr Stakes Day or the $500,000 Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning, held a week earlier at Flemington Racecourse.
Lankan Rupee carried 56kg to victory in the 2014 edition after winning the Rubiton Stakes, while Fastnet Rock was the last horse to complete a Black Caviar Lightning/Oakleigh Plate Double back in 2005. In 2008, Weekend Hussler completed the Oakleigh Plate/Newmarket Handicap double. Other high profile winners of ‘Plate’, which dates back to 1884, include Starspangledbanner (2010), Snitzel (2006), Schillaci (1992), Placid Ark (1987), Dual Choice (1971/72), San Domenico (1949), Aurie’s Star (1937/39) and Wakeful (1901).
