Horse Racing | Shaftesbury Avenue Handicap

The Shaftesbury Avenue Handicap is a Group 3 Open Handicap held on Australian Guineas Day. The day is part of the Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival, which includes other prominent race days such as Blue Diamond Stakes Day and Australian Cup Day. This race attracts a mixture of handy sprinter/milers given it covers a distance of 1400m and offers $120,000 in prize money.

First run back in 2011, the race is named after the versatile Shaftesbury Avenue, who was trained by the great Bart Cummings and won six Group 1 races, including the George Main Stakes, the Emirates Stakes, the Black Caviar Lightening, the Newmarket Handicap, the All Aged Stakes and the Caulfield Stakes. The event started out as a Listed Race, before becoming a Group three in 2013/14 season.
