The Victoria Derby is held on the first day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival on the Victoria Derby Day. It is a Group 1 for three-year-olds over 2500m. In 2014, the stakes pool was $1.5m, with the winning connections picking up $900,000 and a $10,000 trophy. First run in 1855, only one horse has ever won the Victoria Derby twice, and that was only due to an anomaly. Fireworks won in November 1867 and again two months later (1868) after the race date was changed to New Year’s Day. Between 1931 and 1956, geldings weren’t allowed to compete.
In 2005, South Australian Clare Lindop was the first female jockey to ride in the Derby, and three years later, she became the first female winner on Rebel Raider. The first woman to train a Victoria Derby winner was ‘first lady’ of Australian racing, Gai Waterhouse, who saddled up Nothin’ Leica Dane in 1995. Some of Australia’s best stayers tasted Derby success as three-year-olds. Famous names like Phar Lap, Tulloch, Tobin Bronze, Dulcify, Grosvernor and Efficient have their names etched in the Victoria Derby history books.
