Held at the Moonee Valley Racecourse in late September, AJ Moir Stakes Night is one of the meetings staged in the “unofficial” Melbourne Spring Carnival period, as the main carnival doesn’t kick off until the Turnbull Stakes Day, which is the first Saturday in October. Held under lights at the Valley, the night features four other group races to support the feature – the Group 1 AJ Moir Stakes.
The other group contests are - the Stutt Stakes (an Open 3yo over 1600m at set weights), the Champagne Stakes (a 1200m event for 3yo fillies at set weights), the W H Stocks Stakes (an Open Mares WFA race over 1600m) and the JRA Cup (an Open Handicap over the Cox Plate journey of 2040m). Total prize money on offer for the five group races and three support events is in excess of $1.5m. In the 2013/14 season, the AJ Moir Stakes was moved to the eve of the AFL Grand Final, with the Group 1 Manikato Stakes re-scheduled to Cox Plate eve, with night racing becoming very popular in Melbourne.
