Horse Racing | Aurie's Star Handicap

The Aurie’s Star Handicap is a Group 3 Open Handicap held during the Melbourne Spring Carnival on the Auries Star Handicap Day. Given its short distance of 1200m, it attracts handy sprinters, with those who have prior experience down the ‘straight course’ suited. Stayers with bigger goals later in the spring, often use this race to kick off their campaigns. With prize money of $150,000, it may not attract the elite horses, but still boasts quality fields.

First run back in 1996, it was originally an Unlisted Handicap until 2005. Then in 2010, it received Group 3 status, which again has ensured better quality fields. In 2009, Mic Mac won the Aurie’s Star, before his success in the Group 1 Memsie Stakes. Second to Mic Mac, All American was also runner-up in the Group 2 Waterford Mile before winning the Group 1 Emirates Stakes.

The Australian Thoroughbred Rogan Josh had his first start in the Aurie's Star and went on to win the Melbourne Cup in 1999.
