ABOUT BENDIGO CUP DAY

ABOUT BENDIGO CUP DAY

Bendigo Cup Day brings the Victorian Town of Bendigo to life. It is such a big event in the town of Bendigo that it has become a local public holiday. In the past, it was held on the second Wednesday in November during the Melbourne Spring Carnival, but in 2009 the town unanimously voted to have it changed to the last Wednesday in October. With the change in scheduling, the Bendigo Cup can be used as a Melbourne Cup lead up race. The Bendigo Jockey Club was formed in 1858, with the first Bendigo Cup held a decade later as the Sandhurst Cup.

It was won by Old England. Bendigo is situated in the Western District area around 150km from Melbourne and the spacious race course is one of the most picturesque in Victoria. On cup day, the venue is covered in gold roses, marquees, shade umbrellas and enthusiastic racegoers. With fun for the whole family, it tends to attract large crowds to the Epsom Racecourse every year. There is $475,000 in stakes on offer on Bendigo Cup Day, with nine races to support the main event.
