Horse Racing | Carbine Club Stakes

The Carbine Club Stakes is a Group 3 race held at the Flemington Racecourse during the Melbourne Spring Carnival. Contested on the Victoria Derby Day under set weights plus penalties conditions, it a race for three-year-olds, over a distance of 1600m. While the quality young stayers line up in the prestigious Victoria Derby, handy and promising types usually side-step them and opt for the Carbine Club Stakes. However, the race often throws up a potential star in the making, with the best example being Saintly. The Bart Cummings trained youngster heralded his arrival on the big stage with a sensational victory in the 1995 Carbine Club Stakes before launching into a stellar career.

The ‘horse from heaven’ finished with 10 wins and 11 minor placings from 23 starts and $3,851,000 in prize money. His post Carbine Club victories included; the Group 1 Australian Cup, the Group 1 Cox Plate, the Group 1 Melbourne Cup and his farewell race, the Group 1 Orr Stakes. Like Saintly, many horses go on to compete in the Group 2 Sandown Guineas later in the spring, before enjoying long spells and more racing spoils in subsequent campaigns. Kidnapped (2009), Over (1999), Voting (1993) and Shankhill Lass (1995) have won the Carbine/Sandown Guineas double.
