Held annually on the second Saturday in October during the Melbourne Spring Carnival on the Caulfield Guineas Day, the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas thoroughbred race is contested over 1600m and is for three-year-old horses at set weights. With the total prize money over $1m, it’s no wonder it is regarded as one of the turf classics for three-year-olds, with quality fields. First won by Wheatear in 1881, the Caulfield Guineas boasts a stellar honours board. In recent years, winners have included; All Too Hard, Helmet, Starspangledbanner, Whobegotyou, Weekend Hussler, Wonderful World and Lonhro.
Dig deeper and more Aussie greats appear – Redoute’s Choice, Mahogany, Red Anchor, Grosvenor, Manikato, Luskin Star, Vain, Tulloch and Ajax. Heading into the 2014 version, the last filly to win the Caulfield Guineas was the mighty Surround (1976). In 1945, there were two winners, with Attley and Royal Gem dead-heating.
