Caulfield Guineas Day officially kicks off the Caulfield Spring Racing Carnival, which spans over three massive days during the Melbourne Spring Carnival. While the Caulfield Guineas is the star of the show, the day of ‘all group racing’ features three other events at the elite level - the Thousand Guineas, Toorak Handicap and the Caulfield Stakes (all Group 1s). The day, featuring $3m in prize money, also includes two Groups 2s and two Group 3s. In 2014, Thousand Guineas Day was merged with Caulfield Guineas Day creating a massive program of quality racing, eagerly awaited by trainers, owners, jockeys, punters and socialites alike.
It has been held on the second Saturday in October every year since its inception in 1881. The main event, the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas, is regarded as one of the blue ribbon events for three-year-olds and a stallion-making race for the winner if it’s a colt. A host of star gallopers have gone on to further Group 1 glory after competing on this card.
