Horse Racing | Caulfield Stakes

The Caulfield Stakes is a Group 1 weight-for-age race for all horses aged three-years and above, held over a distance of 2000m. It is conducted on Caulfield Guineas Day during the Melbourne Spring CarnivalCaulfield Guineas, the Thousand Guineas and the Toorak Handicap. While the race is still known as the Caulfield Stakes, since 1997 it has also been known as the Yalumba Stakes. This race is held under the same conditions as the Australasian WFA Championship, the Group 1 Cox Plate (two weeks later at Moonee Valley), so many hopefuls use this as a final lead-up.

Some notable horses have taken the prize over the years, from Ajax back in 1938, to Northerly in 2001, Lonhro in 2002/3, So You Think in 2010 and injury plagued mare Atlantic Jewel in 2013. Earlier winners included Ajax (1938), Comic Court (1950), Lord (1958/59/60), Kingston Town (1981/82) and Might And Power (1998).
