Held on the AJ Moir Stakes Night, the Champagne Stakes is a perfect event for three-year-old fillies which may not necessarily have the outright class of the top-flight runners vying for other big Melbourne Spring Carnival features. However, there have been some very handy fillies take out this event including; Snitzerland, Avenue, With Me and Courtza. The race has also been a valuable lead-up for many fillies chasing greater glory deeper in the carnival. Second behind Dan Baroness in the 2008 Champagne Stakes, Ortensia went on to win Group 1 events in three continents (2011 Winterbottom Stakes at Ascot in Perth, 2012 Al Quoz Sprint at Meydan in Dubai and 2012 Nunthorpe Stakes at York in England).
Fifth behind Avenue in 2009, Bart Cummings’ filly Faint Perfume went on to run third in the Group 1 Thousand Guineas before taking out the Group 2 Wakeful Stakes and the Group 1 VRC Oaks. Avenue led all the way in her Champagne victory before scoring in two Group 3s - the Thoroughbred Club Stakes at Caulfield and the Red Anchor Stakes at Moonee Valley.
