Horse Racing | Cockram Stakes

Moved from P B Lawrence Stakes Day in mid-August to Memsie Stakes Day, the W W Cockram Stakes is a Group 3 race for mares over 1200m at Caulfield. The race is named in the honour of prominent Victorian breeder Wally Cockram, who served as Vice Chairman of the Victorian Amateur Turf Club and Melbourne Racing Club from 1970-1984. With prize money of $150,000, the sprint is restricted to mares aged over four years and older, at set weights plus penalties.

The W W Cockram Stakes tends to attract classy gallopers that have shown potential and often go on to compete in major Melbourne Spring Carnival races. It is the first group event of the new racing season for mares only. Stradbroke winner Mid Summer Music took out the Cockram Stakes in 2011, while Chillies finished second in 1998 before going one better 12 months later.
