The Coolmore Stud Stakes is a Group 1 for three-year-olds at set weights down the Flemington 1200m straight course. It was elevated to Group 1 status and became part of Derby Day in 2006, when won by outstanding Queensland filly Gold Edition. It has traditionally been targeted by trainers of classy colts because of the stud value tied to the race, as well as a juicy winner’s cheque of $300,000. However, fillies such as Nechita, Headway, Gold Edition and Alinghi have upstaged their male counterparts. Stars of the Australian turf have been successful in the race originally known as the Ascot Vale Stakes – Vain, Manikato, Campaign King, Tierce and Encosta De Lago are few of those who have saluted.
The searching sprint is limited to 20 runners and it is an amazing sight to watch the often capacity field thunder down the Flemington straight six, invariably in a couple of divisions, and not knowing who is in front until close to the finish line. The Rawiller brothers, Nash and Brad, enjoyed back-to-back success in the late 2000s. Brad steering home his favourite horse Weeekend Hussler for Ross McDonald in 2007 and younger brother Nash saluting a year later on Gai Waterhouse’s Northern Meteor.
