The Cranbourne Cup is a high quality country cup and definitely one of the more prestigious Listed Races during the Melbourne Spring Carnival. Held the day after the Caulfield Guineas, it is a nice indicator of how a horse is travelling heading towards the Caulfield Cup. Run over a distance of 2025m, the race is perfect for stayers looking to build in distance further into the carnival. Since its inception, it has featured some handy competitors over the years, from Sweet Delight in 1997 to Majestical in 2008.
While it may not be one of the main races during the Carnival, it is still one of the bigger country cups on the circuit. 2004 winner On A Jeune went on to run second in the Group 1 Melbourne Cup the following year, while Barbaricus ran a good third in the 2008 Caulfield Cup a week after finishing second behind Majestical at Cranbourne and then was runner up in the Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes on Derby Day.
