Crown Oaks Day, or VRC Oaks Day as it was traditionally known as, is the third day of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival at the famous Flemington Racecourse. Held on the Thursday just a couple of days after the Melbourne Cup, it has become recognised as Ladies Day, with the Fashions on the Field a big draw card for those interested in more than just elegant horse flesh. This is a day full of cosmetic bloom, romantic looks and delicate fabrics, as the prettiest ensembles are on show in what is Australia’s largest outdoor fashion event. But there is also a touch of elegance for those competing on the track.
The winning connections of the Group 1 Crown Oaks receive a handsome prize money cheque of $600,000, plus a stunning crystal trophy. While it may be held on a work day, the Oaks meeting has one of the fastest growing attendance record out of any of the Carnival days, with over 70,000 people attending each year. In the modern era, the record attendance for the Oaks was 110,677 when Hollow Bullet won in 2004. The official flower of Crown Oaks Day is the pink rose. Prize money for the day exceeds $2.1m.
