The Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes is one of two feature races that run as a part of the Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes Day and also form a part of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival. The race has a history of change and evolution, especially with its name. Initially it was called the Glenroy Stakes in 1948, and then the J. F. Feehan Stakes or the J. F. Feehan Handicap (after the landowner of the Moonee Valley Racecourse) from 1949 through to 2004. In 2005, the name was changed to the Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes. Unlike its name, the distance has not changed, remaining a mile race (1600m) since its inception. It was elevated to Group 2 status in 1979. As a Group 2 weight-for-age event boasting $250,000 in prize money, the Dato Tan Chin Nam has always attracted quality horses. El Segundo, Fields Of Omagh, Northerly and Sunline all won this race, before going on to salute in the weight-for-age classic, the WS Cox Plate.
Champion mare Makybe Diva ran consecutive seconds in the Chin Nam Stakes in 2004 and 2005, before winning the 2005 Cox Plate and the last two of her three consecutive Melbourne Cup victories (2003, 2004 & 2005). Further examples of horses who have succeeded in this event prior to the Melbourne Cup are Gai Waterhouse’s classy European import Fiorente, who won this race in 2013 on the way to scoring on the first Tuesday in November. The previous year (2012), Green Moon was runner up to Happy Trails in the event, on the way to saluting in ‘the race that stops a nation’ (Melbourne Cup).
