Horse Racing | David Jones Cup

The David Jones Cup is a Group 3 Open Handicap held on the Caulfield Cup Day. A 2000m event, it attracts handy milers and middle distance horses from across the country. With prize money of $150,000, it may not be one of the most prestigious races at the Melbourne Spring Carnival, but it can be a stepping stone to other more high profile and profitable events.

First held back in 1898, it remained a principal race up until 1978 when it became a Group 3. Originally known as the Coongy Handicap, it changed to the David Jones Cup in 2007. Shocking ran second in this event in 2009 before winning The Lexus Stakes on Derby Day, confirming a start in the Group 1 Melbourne Cup, which the Mark Kavanagh trained entire duly won three days later.
