Horse Racing | Edward Manifold Stakes

Held annually in early October, the Edward Manifold Stakes is a Group 2 horse race staged at Melbourne’s iconic Flemington Racecourse. The event is restricted to three-year-old fillies and is run over 1600m under set weight conditions. It tends to attract promising gallopers from around the country that have shown above average ability and is one of the main features on Turnbull Stakes Day. The race is named in the honour of Edward Manifold, a long term member of the VRC committee and several Western District racing clubs early in the 20th century.

The Lee Freedman trained Alinghi won the Edward Manifold Stakes in 2004, before going on to win the Thousand Guineas later in the spring. Others to achieve that double include Gallica (2008), Special Harmony (2003), Inaflury (1998), Azzurro (1992), Richfield Lady (1991) and Riverina Charm (1988). This is another race which confirms form during the spring. 2011 winner Mosheen went on to success in the VRC Oaks. Third in 2012, Commanding Jewel scored in the Group 1 Thousand Guineas at her next start, while 2010 runner-up Brazilian Pulse backed to run third in the Thousand Guineas, before winning the Wakefield Stakes and VRC Oaks.
