Despite its Group 3 status and regional location, the Geelong Cup, has been a strong form-line for the world famous Melbourne Cup. The race is run over 2400m at the Geelong Racecourse in southern Victoria and is open for all ages and sexes under handicap conditions. With a healthy winner’s cheque of $180,000, the Geelong Cup traditionally attracts top line stayers, many of whom are heading towards the Melbourne Cup. More recently, overseas horses have used this event to round off successful Melbourne Cup campaigns. In 2002, Irish horse Media Puzzle set a trend for European raiders winning at Geelong on the way to a famous victory in the ‘race that stops a nation’ on the first Tuesday in November.
French gallopers Americain (2010) and Dunaden (2011) both completed the Geelong/Melbourne Cup double. Another import Bauer claimed victory in 2008 before being edged out in a controversial photo by Bart Cummings’ Viewed in the Melbourne Cup less than a fortnight later. Battling South Australian trainer Peter Montgomerie saddled up On A Jeune to win in 2005 and the horse stormed home to finish runner-up to triple Melbourne Cup heroine Makybe Diva at Flemington.

Following the scratching of the top-weight, Grey Lion is the top weighted runner with 55kg. The Irish bred galloper will be having his first Australian start for trainer Matt Cumani and carries an interesting link to former Geelong Cup winner Bauer. Cumani is the son of renowned international trainer Luca Cumani who trained Bauer in 2008 to victory. It too was a grey horse and also wore the same colours that Grey Lion will carry, the colours of OTI Racing. Grey Lion is a four time winner that has won up to 2500m and from five attempts when first-up, has won three times.
Chris Waller saddles up the Irish import Kinema for the first time in a race with the 6YO gelding to be ridden by Craig Newitt. Kinema has won over 2400m at Acot and finished 7th in the G2 Goodwood Cup behind Big Orange in July when carrying 61kg. His last run in England before heading to Australia was in the Ebor Handicap at York when finishing mid-field behind the French horse Heartbreak City and will carry 54kg in the Geelong Cup.
A 7YO gelding, Qewy is trained in Newmarket England by Charlie Appleby who has also brought Scottish to Australia for the Melbourne Spring features. Like his stable-mate Qewy is also owned by Godolphin and he arrives a last start 2nd in the Summer Stakes at Goodwood. James McDonald was England for that meeting to ride the gelding, however he will be partnered by Kerrin McEvoy who has won the Geelong Cup twice previously with Zazzman and On A Jeune. The 7YO is a three time winner and has won at 2000m and also at 3300m over the hurdles.
With only a small field over the 2400m, there is a run of about 400m before they get to the first turn which will allow the field time to settle and sort out their positions. Last year’s winner Almoonqith jumped from gate 14, while the previous year Caravan Rolls On jumped from gate 2.
Craig Williams has a strong record in this race, however a suspension imposed during the meeting held on Caulfield Cup day will see him out of action. Kerrin McEvoy is a dual winner and takes the ride on Qewy.
The winning trainer of the 2016 Geelong Cup will land the first Cup of their career, with no trainer having previously landed success in the 2400m feature. Overseas trainers have a good record in the race with Mikel Delzangles, Alain De Royer-Dupre, John Gosden, Luca Cumani and Dermot Weld all having won the Geelong Cup.
