Held every year 13 days prior to Australia’s biggest race the Melbourne Cup, Geelong Cup Day is one of the major country race meetings held outside of the metropolitan area during the spring. With the event falling on a mid-week public holiday late in October in the south-Victorian town, the day always draws in a massive crowd. The race card is headlined by the prestigious Geelong Cup, a race that despite being held at a country club, tends to attract plenty of classy horses. The race itself is a Group 3 Open Handicap run over 2400m around the spacious Geelong track. Despite it not being a Group 2 or Group 1, the $300,000 prize money is one of the highest in its class.
There are normally nine races on Geelong’s big day, with the 3YO Classic (a lead in to the VRC Derby) complimenting the Cup. The Geelong Classic is a Listed Race with no restrictions for three-year-olds and offers prize money of $120,000. The is also the Black Pearl Classic, a Listed Race for fillies and mares three-years and older over 1200m, with stakes of $120,000.
