The G.H. MUMM Stakes, also known as the Begonia Belle Stakes, is a Group 3 race held on Crown Oaks Day during the Melbourne Spring Carnival. A race for mares only, it is run over 1100m and is contested under set weights and penalties conditions. Given the short distance, this race favours sprinters, and the horse that is quick out of the blocks, usually comes away with the major prize money. Up until 2012 it was a Listed Race, but in 2013 it was elevated to a Group 3, and as such, attracts a better class of competitors.
The stakes have also been lifted to $150,000 which makes it even more appealing. The inaugural winner was South Australian Very Discreet trained by Richard Jolly and ridden by Dwayne Dunn. Classy sprinter Ortensia who was successful overseas later in her career, won this race in 2011 when ridden by Darren Beadman.
