Featuring on the same card as the prestigious Group 1 Turnbull Stakes, the Gilgai Stakes is a Group 2 horse race run at Melbourne’s famous Flemington Racecourse. Held annually in early October, the event is run over the 1200m distance on Flemington’s straight track under set weight and penalty conditions. The event is open for all horses aged three-years-old and up and attracts classier sprinters which have gone on to do bigger and better things later in the spring. The race has only been around since 1984, when it was originally known as the Sir Rupert Steele Stakes. The name of the race was changed in 1999, and elevated to Group 2 status in 2007.
Following the Gilgai, many horses go on to contest the Group 2 Salinger Stakes on Derby Day or the Group 1 VRC Sprint on Emirates Day, both of which are down the ‘straight six’. Multiple Group 1 winning horses which have claimed the Gilgai Stakes include Hareeba, Placid Ark and Redelva. From a carnival point of view, Spirit Of Boom took out the Group 2 Caulfield Sprint and placed in the Group 2 Salinger after finishing second to Platelet in 2013. All Silent followed success in this race, with victory in the 2009 VRC Sprint.
