Horse Racing | Herbert Power Stakes

The Herbert Power Stakes is a Group 2 Quality Handicap held on Caulfield Guineas Day. Contested over 2400m and open to horses aged three years and older, it is an important lead up to the Group 1 Caulfield and Melbourne Cups. Dating back to 1898, it has had a few changes over the years, going from 1600m to 2400m and altering its name from the Eclipse Stakes (1898 – 1919) to the Herbert Power Handicap (1920 – 1992), then finally settling on the Herbert Power Stakes (2009). In 2007, Master O’Reilly won the Herbert Power and the following week took out the Caulfield Cup.

In 2009, Shocking finished second in this race before saluting in the Group 3 Lexus Stakes on Derby Day and backing up three days later to win the Melbourne Cup. Bart Cummings’ Rogan Josh was also successful in the Herbert Power en route to giving the ‘Cups King’ the 11th of his 12 Melbourne Cups in 1999. Others to complete the double include Arwon (1978) and Van Der Hum (1976). In 1906, Poseidon managed a staying treble winning the Herbert Power, Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup, before defending his Herbert Power crown in 1907.
