Horse Racing | How Now Stakes

Held annually in late September at Melbourne’s premier Caulfield Racecourse, the How Now Stakes is one of the main races to feature on Underwood Stakes Day. The race is for mares under set weight and penalty conditions. It is run over the sprint distance of 1200m. Originally known as the Cranbourne Daihatsu Stakes, the race began in 1999, and has since changed its name and distance, a number of times. In 2005, the race was elevated to Group 3 status and continues to attract classy sprinters from across the country, many of whom go onto bigger and better things later in the spring.

Better class mares have a good record in this event because of the advantage they get at the level weight conditions. Notable past winners include Taimana, Miss Judgement, Valentine Miss and Sister Madly. In fact, 2011 winner Sister Madly went on to finish second in the Group 1 Manikato Stakes and the Group 2 Tristarc Stakes, before taking out the Group 2 Salinger. Catkins followed her victory in 2013 with success in the Group 3 Eliza Park International Stakes and a second placing in the Myer Classic behind stable mate Red Tracer (trained by Chris Waller).
