Spring Racing | Mackinnon Stakes

Dating back to 1869, the LKS Mackinnon Stakes was originally known as the Melbourne Stakes. It is a Group 1 weight-for-age event over 2000m contested on the Saturday before the Melbourne Cup. Many horses with a high enough ranking to avoid being balloted out of the Cup traditionally use the Mackinnon (or the slightly longer Lexus Stakes) as their final hit-out before Tuesday. Borderline candidates can gain last minute entry into the Melbourne Cup by winning the Mackinnon. With 12 Melbourne Cups to his name, ‘Cups King’ Bart Cummings has three Mackinnon-Cup doubles thanks Rogan Josh, Let’s Elope and Gold And Black.

In more recent times, trainers have set horses specifically for the Mackinnon, knowing that Cup horses don’t really want a gut-buster run just three days before their ‘grand final’. In 2010, the great So You Think backed up a week after winning the Cox Plate to take out the Mackinnon as an odds-on favourite. Aussie equine legends such as Carbine, Wakeful, Par Lap, Peter Pan, Tranquil Star, Tulloch, Leilani, Dulcify and Better Loosen Up have all tasted success in the Mackinnon.
