Manikato Stakes Night is a premier thoroughbred race meeting held at Victoria’s unique Moonee Valley Racecourse. Traditionally, the event was held on the Friday night before the AFL Grand Final, however over the years, it has been transferred to the night prior to the running of the Cox Plate. The program is headlined by the Group 1 Manikato Stakes, a race which rewards the winner automatic qualification into the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint. The Listed William Crocket Stakes for three-year-old fillies over 1200m is also featured on the night.
There’s also a $100,000 Country Cup over 1600m, plus an Open Handicap and a Fillies and Mares Handicap (both over the Cox Plate distance of 2040m and boasting stakes of $100,000). The main event and night are named after the great gelding Manikato, who won the race twice (1979/82), and recorded an amazing five consecutive victories in the William Reid Stakes (1979-83). With the Manikato Stakes winner pocketing $600,000 out of a total purse of $1m, this super sprint attracts the finest speedsters Australian racing has to offer.
