LADY LE FAY

The Chris Waller trained mare appears to get in well with 55kg under the weight scale and will make her first appearance at Flemington in her 23 start career. Last start in the 1600m Tesio Stakes at Moonee Valley when starting as the favourite she was ridden hard along the inside fence, a portion of the track that was ‘off’ all day. The 6YO battled on to be two lengths from the winner Kaniana, a run that can certainly be a forgive run, considering no horse all day performed well on that part of the track. Leading in to the Tesio, Lady Le Fay finished 2nd in the G3 Angst Stakes, carrying 55kg over the 1600m and finishing just over one length from the winner Dixie Blossoms who carried 54kg. She is a winner over 2000m, that win coming when leading in off a 1600m run and Hugh Bowman stays... read more The Chris Waller trained mare appears to get in well with 55kg under the weight scale and will make her first appearance at Flemington in her 23 start career. DENMAGIC

The David Pfeiffer trained mare has really come-on well since the Autumn and despite having not won a race in that time, she continues to race well and has not been far away on each occasion. Taken to the Queensland Winter Carnival following a 2nd to Spill The Beans in the Hawkesbury Guineas, she raced twice in Brisbane. Finishing 6th in the G3 Fred Best Classic with Counterattack taking the win and Takedown finishing 2nd, she then went to the G2 Queensland Guineas, finishing 2nd to Tsaritsa, with both races providing plenty of form and subsequent winners. Resuming this campaign in the G3 Sheraco she finished a half-length from Heavens Above and followed that with a 4th in the G2 Golden Pendant behind Tycoon Tara. Taking on the G1 Myer Classic she was finishing well and was beaten a half-length behind I Am A Star, finishing 3rd. REAL LOVE

The Darren Weir trained Real Love steps back to 2000m after her past 2 runs were at 2400m in the Caulfield Cup and at 2500m in the Lexus Stakes. The 6YO will be looking to emulate Lucia Valentina who won this race in 2015 when carrying the top-weight of 59.5kg. Second-up in the G3 Naturalism Stakes over 2000m she carried 57kg when finishing down the track behind Jameka. Next start in the G3 JRA Cup over the 2040m at Moonee Valley, the mare carried 58kg and was able to score a dominant win, posting a 3 length winning margin. In the 2400m Caulfield Cup she was able to finish in 5th position, beaten 5 lengths behind the dominant winner Jameka. Finishing mid-field on the Lexus Stakes, over 2500m she should appreciate taking on her own sex and has two wins and two placings at the distance.

THE ROUGHIE

THE ROUGHIE

KANIANA

Opening on the 9th line of the UBET market at $19, the Darren Weir trained mare comes into the race a last start winner of the 1600m G3 Tesio Stakes at Moonee Valley. Settling near the rear, the mare finished too strongly to win by just under one length, carrying 57kg to victory. In the G2 Stocks Stakes over 1600m at Moonee Valley, she raced on the speed when carrying 57kg and was able to finish in 2nd, beaten under a half-length, with the in-form Don’t Doubt Mamma taking the win. Stepping out in the G3 Ladies Day Vase at Caulfield, she jumped from the widest barrier and was sent forward, but could only manage a 6th behind Euro Angel. Damian Lane rode the mare to victory in the Tesio and he keeps the ride as the 6YO gets to 2000m for the first time in her career.

MATRIARCH STAKES INFORMATION

MATRIARCH STAKES INFORMATION

The Matriarch Stakes, or Momentum Energy Stakes as it is also known, is a Group 2 race over 2000m that is held on Emirates Stakes Day. A race for mares only, it is held under set weights and penalties conditions. Staged at the famous Flemington Racecourse, this event attracts better quality females, with many of the top-line mares already sent to the paddock for a spell after completing their campaigns. First run back in 1995, the event went through a lot of changes in the first two decades, changing from a Listed Race to a Group 3 in 2000, until finally reaching Group 2 level in 2005.

The Matriarch Stakes has been won by some handy mares in the past, from Flushed in 2000 to Bird of Fire in 2008. A few outsiders have taken the prize in the past, like 2010 winner, Well Rounded, who was a $50 shot from the Lee Freedman stable. In 2013, Girl Gone Rocking ($17) went from a second placing in a mediocre BM 70 at Kensington in Sydney to winning the Matriarch by a nose over well-fancied Gai Waterhouse runner, Queenstown.
