Horse Racing | Maybe Mahal Stakes

The Lavazza Short Black Stakes, also known as the Maybe Mahal Stakes, is a Group 3 race that is held on the famous Melbourne Cup Day. A race for mares only, it is raced under set weights plus penalties conditions. The name Maybe Mahal Stakes comes from the Bart Cummings horse of the same name that raced in the late 70’s. Winner of the Australian Racehorse of the Year in 1977-1978, Maybe Mahal had 14 wins from 44 starts with numerous placing’s in between. Run over a distance of 1400m, it was first contested in 2005 and won by Vintner.

Previously a Listed Race, the Maybe Mahal was upgraded to Group 3 status for the 2012/13 season. Stakes money was also elevated to $200,000 in 2014. This event lends itself to better performed mares and normally offers plenty of value. In 2013, it was a wide-open affair with the $5 favourite Arinosa finishing second behind $17 chance Plucky Belle. In fact, of the 16 starters that year, only three were in single figures. Most mares spell after contesting the Maybe Mahal, though some may back up in the Group 3 Summoned Stakes at Sandown 11 days later.
