THE CAULFIELD SPRING CARNIVAL
The Caulfield Spring Carnival is one of five conducted during the Melbourne Spring Carnival. Held over a week in mid-October, it features the Caulfield Guineas, the Thousand Guineas and the time-honoured Caulfield Cup. With over $7m in prize money on offer at Caulfield, it often provides punters and race enthusiasts a preview of the form heading into the Melbourne Cup Carnival.
THE GEELONG SPRING CARNIVAL
The Wednesday after the Caulfield Cup is reserved for the Geelong Cup meeting, staged by the Geelong Racing Club. It is the only group race featured on Victoria’s country circuit and a prominent feature on the Spring Racing calendar. With a total prize pool of just over $500,000, punters and racing enthusiasts travel to Geelong to check out the action, as Melbourne Cup and Victoria Derby hopefuls often race in the two main events.
THE MOONEE VALLEY SPRING CARNIVAL
Following the Geelong Spring Carnival, the attention turns to Moonee Valley for two days of exhilarating thoroughbred racing. Manikato Stakes Night takes place the Friday after the Geelong Cup, and is a major draw card for topline sprinters. The main race, the Manikato Stakes, is held over a distance of 1200m, with total prize money of just over $1,000,000. The Saturday after is reserved for the famous W.S. Cox Plate. Named in honour of the founder of the Moonee Valley Racing Club, William Samuel Cox, the Cox Plate (a 2040m Weight-for-Age race) was introduced in 1922. Now one of the premier races in the spring, the Cox Plate is known as the ‘Australasian Weight-For-Age Championship’ and is also one of the main lead up races to the Melbourne Cup.
THE FLEMINGTON SPRING CARNIVAL
The Flemington Spring Carnival is the premier carnival in Melbourne during the spring. Held at the famous Flemington racecourse, it hosts some of the biggest races of the year. Victoria Derby Day is on the Saturday following the Cox Plate, then Melbourne Cup Day is, of course, on the Tuesday, followed by Crown Oaks Day on the Thursday, and finally, Emirates Stakes Day wraps up a week of action, on and off the track, on the second Saturday. Racing lovers and socialites from across the country often take the full week off work just to enjoy everything ‘fabulous’ Flemington has to offer on the four spectacular race days.
THE SANDOWN SPRING CARNIVAL
The Sandown Spring Carnival is the last official meeting of the Melbourne Spring Carnival, held in mid-November. Taking place at Sandown Racecourse, it features the Group 2 Sandown Classic, the Group 2 Sandown Guineas and the Group 3 Eclipse Stakes.
