I AM A STAR

Trained at Mornington by Shane Nichols, I Am A Star has raced well at her four starts this campaign. Resuming after a short spell at the end of her 2YO preparation the filly flashed home from near last at the 400m to win the G3 Quezette Stakes at Caulfield defeating Leotie. Taken to Sydney for the G2 Furious Stakes over 1200m, a mix of the right handed racing for the first time and a track rated at a heavy 8 saw the filly finish 5th behind Foxplay. Returning to Victoria her next start in the Thousand Guineas Prelude was a 4th behind Legless Veuve, beaten just over one length. Her most recent start came in the G1 Thousand Guineas at Caulfield where she finished off the race well to finish 2nd behind Global Glamour, beaten one length. She handled the 1600m in the Thousand Guineas without issue and lines up... read more Trained at Mornington by Shane Nichols, I Am A Star has raced well at her four starts this campaign. LA LUNA ROSSA

Making her Australian debut in the Thousand Guineas Prelude, La Luna Rossa was able to finish a half-length second behind Legless Veuve. Looking for openings along the home straight after having settled in a mid-field spot, she found an opening at the 250m. After being hard ridden to run through the opening she really started to let down into the bridle the closing 100m and made up good ground. Lining up in the Thousand Guineas from gate 7 La Luna Rossa returned perhaps one of her most disappointing performances. There were certainly excuses after being ridden against her normal pattern when put right on the pace and for this race will have the blinkers removed for the first time. Mark Zahra has been booked for the ride and will be in the saddle as he looks to make it successive wins in the race after piloting My Poppette to victory... read more Making her Australian debut in the Thousand Guineas Prelude, La Luna Rossa was able to finish a half-length second behind Legless Veuve. SEZANNE

Another of the Waller/Bowman combinations on the day, Sezanne will be making her first appearance at both Moonee Valley and in Victoria. Stepping out for her first race as a 3YO, the More Than Ready filly was able to win a 3YO maiden set-weights event at Canterbury on a heavy 8. Backing that up with another win at Canterbury in a benchmark 67 fillies and mares carrying 58kg and starting as the favourite, she earned a shot at the better fillies races on the calendar. A 4th in the G2 Tea Rose Stakes behind Foxplay when beaten a half-length was followed with a 3rd in the G1 Flight Stakes over 1600m, finishing behind Global Glamour and Yankee Rose. Hugh Bowman goes back aboard, riding the filly for the 2nd time after partnering her to her 2nd win and the pair will jump from a wide barrier in gate 15.

STOP MAKING SENSE

First-up over 1200m in the G3 Scarborugh Stakes, Stop Making Sens started from a wide gate and was taken to the rear of the 12 horse field. With 200m left to run, the filly had a wall of horses in front of her and looked to have no chance of featuring. With 100m left to run and still three lengths off the leader a small gap appeared and Luke Nolen went straight into the space and she attacked the line strongly getting within a long neck of the winner in taking 2nd place. Second-up in the G3 Thoroughbred Club Stakes at Caulfield, again over 1200m, she failed to fire a shot and a subsequent scope detected an issue that contributed to the performance. The filly won over 1400m as a 2YO and appears that the 1600m of this race will prove no issue. Luke Nolen keeps the ride, having ridden... read more First-up over 1200m in the G3 Scarborugh Stakes, Stop Making Sens started from a wide gate and was taken to the rear of the 12 horse field. MOONEE VALLEY FILLIES CLASSIC INFORMATION

MOONEE VALLEY FILLIES CLASSIC INFORMATION

The Moonee Valley Fillies Classic is a Group 2 race held on Cox Plate Day at the famous Moonee Valley Racecourse. It is a race for three-year-old fillies and is conducted under set weight plus penalties conditions. It is now known as the Moonee Valley Fillies Classic, but originally was the Moonee Valley Oaks until 2005, when it was changed to the Woodstock Mile. Then it became the Woodstock Classic and the Hollylodge Classic until 2012. It was also originally a Listed Race run in autumn, but in 2012 it was moved to Cox Plate Day and became part of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.

The distance was reduced from 2040m to 1600m in 2005. Many of those who contest this event go on to race in the Group 1 Wakeful Stakes and the Group 1 Crown Oaks. In 2013, Gypsy Diamond backed up from a sixth in the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (which includes the males) to beat $1.90 favourite Gregers in the Moonee Valley Fillies Classic. The great Sunline was successful in this race in 1999, while super three-year-old Special Harmony was also successful five years later.<./p>
