Myer Classic | Horse Racing | UBET

The Myer Classic is last of the elite races on Derby Day. It is over 1600m and one of only two Group 1s for fillies and mares during the Melbourne Spring Carnival. Concordance was successful in the inaugural running (1988), when the race was a Listed Event. The Myer Classic has gained status over the years and gone through several name changes as sponsors turned over. The showcase event for the fairer sex started as the Honda Legend, then became the Hong Kong Bank Stakes, Hardy Brothers Classic and the Nestle Peters Classic.

In 2005, the Myer Group signed up and it became the Myer Classic. In 2003, it was elevated to Group 2 status and changed from a set weight race with penalties to a weight-for-age event. One year later, it was upgraded to Group 1, and in 2014, prize money hit the half-million mark. Popular past winners include; Red Tracer (2013), Appearance (2012), Typhoon Tracy (2009), Divine Madonna (2007) Bonanova (1998) and Excited Angel (1992).

BARRIERS

BARRIERS

Run over 1600m, the start point for this race provides a 250m run into the first turn, which is a sweeping bend that means a horse drawn wide that cannot get in is forced to cover a lot of extra ground. Despite this fact, seven of the past nine winners have started from a double-digit barrier. In fact the past five winners have come from either gate 10 (2013 & 2015) or 13 (2011, 2012, 2014).

JOCKEYS

JOCKEYS

Michael Rodd has a good record in this race, having won three of the past nine editions. Glen Boss and Corey Brown are the only jockeys that have won this race on multiple occasions since 2000. Craig Newitt has started in this race seven times for one second placing. Hugh Bowman has had six starts for no top three finishes.

TRAINERS

TRAINERS

Since this race became a Group race in 1995, John Hawkes is the only trainer to have had multiple successes, winning in 1997 and in 2003. Chris Waller has a handy record of 6:1-1-1, while David Hayes in his own name and in partnership is winless after nine attempts.
