Horse Racing | Naturalism Stakes

Featuring on the same race card as the eye-catching Group 1 Underwood Stakes, the Naturalism Stakes is a Group 3 Open Handicap thoroughbred horse race run at Melbourne’s iconic Caulfield Racecourse. Held annually in mid/late September, the event is the first major race that is run over the mid-distance of 2000m. Given that it’s staged early in the spring, the event provides trainers with the opportunity to test their horses over a middle distance, and decide whether to compete in bigger races.

The race has only been around since 2000 and was upgraded to Group 3 status in 2009. Since then, the event has been won by a number of classy gallopers. The Robert Hickmott trained champion gelding Zipping was triumphant in 2006, before going on to win the Group 1 Sandown Classic four times and place in both the Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup on three occasions.
