Horse Racing | Ottawa Stakes

The Carnival Celebration Stakes, also known as the Ottawa Stakes, is a Group 3 sprint held on Melbourne Cup Day. Run over the 1000m scamper, it is the shortest race of the day. It is an event for two-year-old fillies at set weights. Originating back in 1978, it has gone through many changes over the years, starting off as a Listed Race until it was upgraded to a Group 3 in 2013. Usually attracting in-form fillies, the race can be a punter’s nightmare given it’s a mad dash for the babies of the turf and there is often undisclosed form amongst the runners.

Classier fillies and those who have race experience are better suited in this event down the Flemington ‘1000m straight course’. 2013 victor Oakleigh Girl ($6.50) bucked that trend winning this event at her first race start, beating favourite Top Dolly.
