PB LAWRENCE STAKES FORM

  • VERDICT: Black Heart Bart - returning for his 7YO season, Black Heart Bart will be lookign to turn around the end of his last campaign where he was unplaced in both the G1 Goodwood and G1 Kingsford Smith- the only time he has been unplaced in successive runs since joining the Darren Weir stable and just the third time in 15 starts for Weir that he has been unplaced. He loves the Caulfield track, with 5 wins and 2nd from 6 starts at The Heath, while at the 1400m at Caulfield his record is the perfect 4 from 4. In Bart we trust....

  • THREAT: Tosen Stardom- lightly raced, the Japanese import comes into this race with an Australian prep and spell behind him for the first time in his career. During the Autumn he had 2 starts that returned a pair of 2nd placed runs in the Futurity behind Black Heart Bart and the Blamey behind Palentino. There have been pleasing reports from the Weir stable about Tosen Stardom and his only Caulfield run was a cracker when 1st up over this same distance when he went within a head of his stablemate BHB. He could be in for a big Spring.

  • ROUGHIE: Star Exhibit- Darren Weir has a stranglehold on this race, preparing 6 runners and all come into the race with a chance to fill a trifecta position. The 6YO might be looking for a longer trip but when making its debut for Weir back in the Autumn it was able to win at Listed level over the Caulfield 1440m when resuming. He then finished a 1.5lenght 2nd in the G1 Doomben Cup over 2000m before being sent for a spell. He is 3 from 4 when first-up and could be a spring watch, Back Weir, drink...

TEMPO

  • Charmed Harmony will likely be sent forward and with a lack of any real go forward-types, he should be setting the tempo.

  • With the absence of front-runners, there could be a lack of genuine tempo.

  • Tosen Stardom might be sent forward from the wide gate to get in the action early- he raced forward at both starts in the Autumn and ran strong races.

  • Black Heart Bart will likely settle just in behind the pace and try to be in the front half of the field.

  • Abbey Marie will be dropping out and looking to round them up in the closing stages.

CONSIDER

  • Black Heart Bart has an amazing record at Caulfield- 5 wins from 6 attempts, 4 from 4 at the 1400m, 3 of those at G1 level.

  • He's Our Rokkii is a three-time winner at Caulfield, two of those at 1400m.

  • Darren Weir took all before him last season with a record number of winners, he prepares 6 runners in this field.

  • Tashbeeh wears winkers for the first time. Black Heart Bart will race without blinkers.

  • Lankan Rupee was a dual acceptor but is an early scratching here after Mick Price preferred to tackle a race at Morphettville.

FACTORS

  • Tosen Stardom was a beaten odds-on favourite last start in the Blamey Stakes. Horses that have tackled the Blamey and then run in this race when fresh have performed well historically.

  • Looking for winners deeper into the Spring- a large percentage of winners of this race have not really gone on with it

  • Miss Rose De Lago was successful in 2016 and is the only mare to have won the race in the past 15 years.

  • Gailo Chop has not raced since March 2016. The 7YO won the 2015 Mackinnon Stakes when trained by Antoine de Watrigant and has started just twice since.

EARLY BIRD

  • Early shoppers will face deductions following the scratching of Lankan Rupee of $0.16 x $0.14.

  • After opening at $21, Star Exhibit has been the biggest early go to see his quote firm to $10 following the scratching. Included was $1,300 at $4.60.

  • No Lankan Rupee has seen Black Heart Bart trimmed to $2.70.

  • Hartnell will be having his first start with James Cummings in charge of Godolphin's Australian operations and is steady on the second line at $3.40.

PB LAWRENCE HISTORICAL INFORMATION

PB LAWRENCE HISTORICAL INFORMATION

Run over 1400m at Melbourne’s Caulfield Racecourse during the P B Lawrence Stakes Day, the P B Lawrence Stakes is a Weight-for-Age event. The race itself is named in honour of Peter B. Lawrence, who spent 12 years as Chairman of the Melbourne Racing Club. Although the race is only rated as a Group 2, it attracts quality sprinters, as well as stayers who are either resuming or early in their spring campaigns. The P B Lawrence is Caulfield’s first major race of the Melbourne Spring Carnival.

In 2013, Darren Weir’s imported stallion, Puissance de Lune, claimed its second Group 2 win sweeping from the back of the field to edge out Ajeeb. Past winners have gone on to excel in bigger and better races, including eight-time Group 1 winner Apache Cat, who saluted in 2007. Other star performers to take out the P B Lawrence include; Whobegotyou, Shoot Out, Pompeii Ruler and Mahogany.
