MAHUTA

Resuming in the G3 Bletchingly, the Darren Weir trained Mahuta opened at $3.50 and touched $3.40 before blowing a gale and ending up jumping at $6.50 fixed with UBET. Despite the drift Mahuta settled mid-field and found the pace a bit too sharp first up. He steps out in distance which is ideal with a record of two from two over the Caulfield 1400m and is a three time winner overall at the distance. Weir is setting the six time winner on an early Spring path towards the Memsie Stakes. Prior to being spelled in his 3YO term, Mahuta was successful in six successive races. His winning streak included the Listed Gothic Stakes where he defeated subsequent Group winners Holler and Takedown, the G3 Carbine Club Stakes and the Sandown. SUAVITO

The Nigel Blackiston trained mare resumes following a four start Autumn campaign where she raced at the elite level on each occasion. That campaign came after a near 12 month stint on the sidelines as she entered the CF Orr Stakes first up off the 2015 Doncaster. In the Orr Stakes she hit the line strongly to take the win by just under one length. Second up in the G1 Futurity Stakes she was able to place and took third behind Turn Me Loose and Stratum Star. Michael Walker has been booked for the ride after Luke Currie had partnered the mare through the Autumn. The 5YO mare has developed a strong record since turning 4 with the Spring carnival of 2014 signalling her arrival as a quality race mare and she has impressive figures for this race. THE CLEANER

Originally scheduled to begin his campaign for new trainer Peter Gelagotis in the G3 Bletchingly Stakes, the 9YO was scratched and given a jump-out instead and set for this race. The gelding last started in December when finishing 7th of 8 runners in the Listed Conquering Stakes at Launceston behind Admiral. His 2015 Spring campaign began in the P B Lawrence Stakes with a head 2nd to now stablemate Mourinho and followed that with a one and three-quarter length victory in the G2 Feehan Stakes at Moonee Valley. A 3rd in the G1 Underwood when beaten a neck, again by Mourinho was his final lead-in to the Cox Plate. He was a 6 length winner of a trial on the Cranbourne synthetic and while he may find the 1200m too sharp 1st up, he does have a handy 9: 3-3-1 record when resuming.

SET SQUARE

With the Ciaron Maher trained mare resuming here after missing the Autumn, the popular trainer has suggested that her best will be later in the Spring in races like the Turnbull Stakes and Caulfield Cup. With the big races approaching and more talented gallopers hitting the track, the 5YO opened with UBET at $26 and $8.50 and has met with some support at the place option already and futures players should be paying close attention to her performance in this. Having stepped out over the Caulfield 1400m trip once previous in a mares only handicap, she was allotted the top-weight of 61.5 kg and carried 59.5kg with a claim to finish a neck 2nd. At 1400m on all tracks she has the record of 3: 0-2-1 and Maher has removed the blinkers for this campaign, stating she has matured and is now more relaxed.

PB LAWRENCE HISTORICAL INFORMATION

PB LAWRENCE HISTORICAL INFORMATION

Run over 1400m at Melbourne’s Caulfield Racecourse during the P B Lawrence Stakes Day, the P B Lawrence Stakes is a Weight-for-Age event. The race itself is named in honour of Peter B. Lawrence, who spent 12 years as Chairman of the Melbourne Racing Club. Although the race is only rated as a Group 2, it attracts quality sprinters, as well as stayers who are either resuming or early in their spring campaigns. The P B Lawrence is Caulfield’s first major race of the Melbourne Spring Carnival.

In 2013, Darren Weir’s imported stallion, Puissance de Lune, claimed its second Group 2 win sweeping from the back of the field to edge out Ajeeb. Past winners have gone on to excel in bigger and better races, including eight-time Group 1 winner Apache Cat, who saluted in 2007. Other star performers to take out the P B Lawrence include; Whobegotyou, Shoot Out, Pompeii Ruler and Mahogany.
