Horse Racing | Red Anchor Stakes

The Red Anchor Stakes is a Group 3 race held at the famous Moonee Valley Racecourse during the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival. Raced on Cox Plate Day, it is run over 1200m and is for three-year-olds at set weights plus penalties. Given the distance of the race, it is made for sprinters and the horse that is quick out of the gate. Experience at the tricky Moonee Valley circuit is a bonus for Red Anchor hopefuls. When it was first staged back in 1985, the Red Anchor was originally a Listed Race until it was elevated to a Group 3 in 1990.

Over the years it has gone through many name changes including; the C S Hayes Stakes (1990–2005) and the City Pacific Finance Stakes (2006–2011). This race is normally taken out by above average youngsters, rather than top liners. Quality sprinters such as Rubiton (1986), Sequalo (1993), Spartacus (1996), Oratorio (2004) and Avenue (2009) have enjoyed Red Anchor glory.
