The Les Bridge trained 4YO opened at $4.80 when the UBET market was released and he has met with solid support and firmed in to $4.40. The gelding is a four-time winner from just eight starts, with two of those wins coming over the 1200m trip. This campaign he resumed in a benchmark 85 at Randwick over 1000m carrying 60kg and jumping from the widest gate in barrier 13. That wasn’t enough to stop him as he was able to finish strongly and take a narrow victory. Second-up in to the G2 Theo Marks Stakes over 1300m he started favourite and finished in third place, beaten under one length behind Mackintosh. Subsequent G1 Manikato Stakes winner Rebel Dane finished in sixth. His latest run was in the G2 Premiere Stakes where he finished 1.5 lengths from the winner Takedown. KEEN ARRAY

The Hayes/Dabernig trained 4YO has been in good form this preparation, winning his past two in succession following a 2nd placed effort when resuming. In the G1 Coolmore on Derby Day he was able to finish 2nd to Japonisme and lines up this year again down the straight six, looking to land his first win at Flemington. The gelding resumed in the Listed Chandler Macleod over 1200m at Moonee Valley and was able to finish a one length 2nd to Voodoo Lad. Kept at 1200m he then went to Caulfield for the Listed Testa Rossa Stakes and carrying 54.5kg was able to land a narrow victory. His latest start was again at the Caulfield 1200m where he took on a Listed 1200m and he landed a dominant two length victory, carrying the equal topweight of 59.5kg. Opening on the second line at $5.50 he has remained steady in early trading.

WE’VE GOT THIS

5YO gelding We’ve Got This has missed a place just once from ten attempts over 1200m, including winning four of those. This campaign has seen the gelding step up against Group company and he has acquitted himself in good order. Resuming in The Heath at G3 level at Caulfield over 1100m, he settled at the rear of the pack and was finishing nicely, hitting the line well, beaten 2.5 lengths behind Redzel. Second-up in the G2 Bobbie Lewis down the straight six and carrying 53kg he again closed out late to be under two lengths from the winner in taking 3rd behind Faatinah. His latest run came in the G2 Gilgai Stakes and carrying 55kg again down the Flemington 1200m and was able to finish in 2nd place, beaten less than one length in a race taken by The Quarterback. THE ROUGHIE

THE ROUGHIE

DOTHRAKI

The Snowden trained 6YO gelding will be third up this preparation following his break after the winter where he began meeting the stronger types after stepping up to the elite level. Resuming in the G2 The Shorts and carrying 56kg he finished in 4th place and was less than a half-length from the winner. Taken to Caulfield for his second-up run in the G2 Schillaci Stakes, he found the 58.5kg too much with 3YO Star Turn carrying 53kg able to take the win. Dothraki has had two previous runs at Flemington, finishing 3rd in this race last year behind Éclair Choice and wining there over 1400m back in 2013. He lands the outside barrier and with this being the last race on the day, could be the place to be as they look to get to the grandstand rail.

SALINGER STAKES INFORMATION

SALINGER STAKES INFORMATION

The Salinger Stakes is a Group 2 race that is a part of Victoria Derby Day. Held at the famous Flemington Racecourse, it is an Open Handicap over 1200m. Horses that have tackled either the Caulfield Sprint or the AJ Moir Stakes tend to back up in this sprint down the Flemington straight six course. It suits horses which can cruise at high speed, sustain pressure and run out a strong 1200m. The Salinger Stakes is often a good indicator of whether a horse is travelling well enough to compete in the Group 1 VRC Sprint Classic, a week later. In 2005, Glamour Puss successfully backed up in the VRC Sprint Classic after taking out the Salinger, while Pharein completed the same double six years earlier.

Anthony Cummings’ Fontelina has his own double, winning back-to-back Salingers in 2012 & 2013. Planet Ruler and River Rough also won in consecutive years. Starting off as a Group 1 race and known as the Craven A Stakes, the race has gone through numerous name changes over the years and was downgraded to a Group 2 in 2007. It was also changed to a handicap, rather than a weight-for-age contest. Vain (1969), Maybe Mahal (1976), Sky Filou (1987), Hareeba (1994), Takeover Target (2004) and Hot Danish are other notable winners of the Salinger Stakes.
