REDKIRK WARRIOR

Opening $2.40 in the UBET market, the Hayes/Dabernig trained Redkirk Warrior will line up for just the second time in twelve months and for just the second time in Australia. Appearing for the first time at Moonee Valley on Manikato Stakes night he took on a 1200m handicap from the widest gate and allotted 57kg. In a race where nothing seemed to go his way, he fought gamely to get within a half-length of the winner Sir Bacchus. The British-bred 6YO has arrived in Australia via Hong Kong, with his five appearances in Hong Kong returning one win and one 2nd placing. In total he has only started eight times for three wins, with those wins coming over 2000m (x2) and at 1600m. Damian Lane rode the gelding at his Australian debut and has been replaced by Craig Williams in the Sandown Stakes. STRATUM STAR

He will be fourth-up this campaign, hi first three runs coming at Group 1, 2 and 3 level. Last start in the G1 Cantala Stakes when carrying 56kg over the 1600m, he raced handy but couldn’t go when the sprint went on and finished just over five lengths from the winner Le Romain. Carrying 59.5kg under the set weights and penalties scale of the G3 Moonga Stakes, he finished three lengths in arrears of the winner Voodoo Lad. The 5YO has raced twice previously at Sandown, finishing 2nd on both occasions, including in the Sandown Guineas as a 3YO. Brad Rawiller goes back aboard and he has ridden the entire in two of his five career wins.

SANDOWN STAKES INFORMATION

The Sandown Stakes is a Group 3 Quality Handicap race is held on Sandown Classic Day as the Melbourne Spring Carnival winds down. A race over 1500m, it normally is appealing to handy sprinter/milers looking for black type success. It is the last decent sprint race of the Spring Carnival and attracts competitors from across the country. On the tough Sandown track, out and out sprinters are usually exposed over the 1500m trip. First contested back in 1981, it was known as the Coles New World Stakes until 1990, when it changed to what it is today, the Sandown Stakes.

In recent times, jockey Craig Williams scored three straight wins in the race (2011, 2012, 2013). Twice he was aboard Mahisara (2012/13), while Under The Eiffel (2011) was his other victorious mount. Other good gallopers to salute in the Sandown Stakes include; Procol Harum (1990), Mazelle Pedrille (1995) and Titanic Jack (2005).
