Horse Racing | Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes

Also known as the Invitation Stakes, the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes is a Group 1 Open Handicap run over the distance of 1400m. Named after a former soldier who became one of the most respected men in the Melbourne racing industry, the event is recognised as one of the premier races to fall outside of the official Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival. With up to 16 runners in the field competing for prize money of $500,000, there’s always plenty of value.

It’s a race celebrated jockey Craig Williams is all too familiar with, having two back-to-back successes in 2005/06 and 2010/11. In 2013, pre-race favourite Rebel Dane required every centimetre of the 1400m distance, with Glenn Boss driving the Gary Portelli trained horse home late to pip Fontelina right on the line in a thrilling finish. That was the triple-Melbourne Cup winning jockey’s first success in this event in nine rides. Up until 2013, Damien Oliver had the best record in this race winning 6 of 17.
