SUMMONED STAKES - FOUR FAST FACTS

The Summoned Stakes is named to honour the deeds of the wonderful broodmare Summoned who although unraced, produced 13 individual winners including the Group winners Zeditave, Alannon, Pampas Fire, Zedagal and Square Deal.

The race is held on Zipping Classic Day at Sandown and is restricted to four year old and older mares. Run over a distance of 1500m, the race is held under the conditions of set weights plus penalties. First held in 1995 at Listed level, the race was elevated to the current status of Group 3 in 2013.

Total prizemoney on offer in 2017 is $150,000. The 2016 winner was the Andrew Noblet trained Solicit, ridden by Craig Williams. Other past winners include Solicit, Politeness, Bernicia, It’s Platonic and Cannyanna.

SHILLELAGH

Opening at $4.80 when the UBET market was released, 5YO mare Shillelagh met with early support to see her price cut to $3.90 at take the mantle of favourite. Trained by Stephen Autridge and Jamie Richards, the mare has had four starts in her Australian campaign that has returned a win and a narrow 2nd. Sent to Caulfield for a 1440m benchmark 84 and allotted 54kg, she was sent out the favourite and after settling at the rear of the field, worked home strongly to take the win. Lining up in the G2 Tristarc Stakes, after racing mid-field she couldn’t go with the likes of First Seal and Tycoon Tara. On Melbourne Cup Day she tackled the 1400m G3 Maybe Mahal and ridden from the rear flashed late to finish a half-length from the winner Artistry. SILENT SEDITION

Trained by Andrew Noblet at Caulfield Silent Sedition has strung together a good record of 11: 3-4-3 with the only time she missed the money when 4th in the 2015 G2 Moonee Valley Fillies Classic. This preparation the 4YO mare has had just the two starts and has been beaten under one length on both occasions. Resuming in the G3 Northwood Plume over 1200m at Caulfield she was only beaten by the smart sprinting mare Sheidel who has subsequently won at Group level again and contested the G1 Darley Classic. Second-up in the 1400m G3 Maybe Mahal, Silent Sedition started favourite with 57.5kg she was hitting the line strongly in the closing 100m and was grabbed by the swooping Artistry, with Shillelagh getting up along the fence for 2nd. The extra distance this week looks to suit, with the concern being her starting gate of barrier 16.

EXTENSIBLE

Trained by the Snowden’s, Extensible has missed a place just once in her ten start career, with that coming at her latest start when finishing 4th at her first attempt in Group company. Starting favourite in the G3 Angst Stakes over 1600m at Randwick, she carried 54kg under the set weights and penalties scale and found herself a long way back in the run and was in the last pair with the eventual winner Dixie Blossoms. While that mare went for gaps in the centre, Extensible was taken to the extreme outside and never really ran on until the closing 100m when she seemed to get going. Three starts back she tackled a benchmark 82 over 1500m at Rosehill on a heavy 9. Carrying 56.5kg she started favourite and was beaten a neck by Antonio Giuessepe. THE ROUGHIE

THE ROUGHIE

MOSSBEAT

Transferred to the Hayes/Dabernig stable at the start of this preparation, Mossbeat finished 3rd in this race in 2015 behind Solicit. Since that run, she has managed to win just the one race since, that win coming at her latest start. Taken to Cranbourne for a benchmark 78 over 1400m, Michael Walker took the ride and settling near the pace finished off too strongly to take a three-quarter length victory. That run followed a 2nd at Sale over 1400m on a track rated at a heavy 9. Although the winner of just 2 races from 29 attempts, she has placed on a further 14 occasions. From 4 attempts at Sandown, the 5YO mare is yet to miss a place with a 2nd and three 3rds from four visits to the track. Glyn Schofield goes aboard for the first time.

SUMMONED STAKES INFORMATION

SUMMONED STAKES INFORMATION

The Summoned Stakes is the final race of Sandown Classic Day and brings down the curtain on the Melbourne Spring Carnival. It is a Group 3 race for mares under set weights and penalty conditions, run over 1200m. It is the sole group race for ‘mares only’ on Sandown Classic Day and provides owners and breeders one last opportunity to grab some black type success.

It was first run as a Listed Race back in 1996. In 2013, Floria’s victory heralded the first Summoned Stakes run at Group 3 level, with connections collecting a purse of $90,000. The Peter Moody trained mare started at prohibitive odds ($1.50) and had to fight hard to stave off Hi Belle and Wistful.
