The Thoroughbred Club Stakes is Group 3 race for three-year-old fillies. Over 1200m, the race is conducted at set weights with penalties, which means the better performed fillies carry extra weight. Held on the famous Caulfield Guineas Day, the race usually attracts handy fillies who normally don’t figure in the elite carnival events. The race boasts a prize pool of $150,000, with $90,000 going to the winner. Since its inception in 1976, some prominent horses have won the event including Boardwalk Angel in 1988, Vigil in 1995, Damselfly in 2008 and Platelet in 2011. Queenslander Missy Longstocking won a BM 85 event over 1000m at Eagle Farm prior to an easy victory in the 2013 Thoroughbred Club Stakes.
Many of those who comepte in this event go on to bigger and better things. 2011 winner Platelet went on to win the Group 1 Sangster Stakes and Group 1 Goodwood at Morphettville in the autumn of 2013 and the Group 2 Gilgai at Flemington that October. In 2009, Avenue followed her victory in the Thoroughbred Club Stakes with success in the Group 3 Red Anchor Stakes, while Headway (2nd behind Avenue), took out the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes.
