It may not be the main act on Caulfield Guineas Day, but the Thousand Guineas still brings together some of the best fillies from around Australia. A set weights race restricted to three-year-old fillies, the Thousand Guineas is run over 1600m. Prize money for the event is $500,000. The Thousand Guineas used to be held on the middle day (Wednesday) of the Caulfield Carnival, but for the 2013/14 season was transferred to Caulfield Guineas Day. Starting back in 1946, it has featured some of the country’s best young females.
Notable winners of the Thousand Guineas include; Wenona Girl in 1960, Toltrice in 1972, Goleen in 1984, to Special Harmony, Alinghi and Miss Finland in the 2000s, and Atlantic Jewell in 2011. Even though they boys are ineligible for this race, it is not an easy one to win. Trainers and owners are not only interested in the rich stakes on offer, but the chance to pick up Group 1 glory, which is handy from a broodmare prospective. Run at set weights, it normally means the best fillies fight out the finish.
